Another Science Fiction: Advertising the space race 1957-1962
Megan Prelinger (Blast Books, 2010)
There’s no need to provide a book review, you can check out the NY Times’ own piece here:
Suffice to say: ad fans, especially those of the Mad Men persuasion, will adore this. A beautiful collection of hand-crafted advertising – painting, illustration and graphic design from a time before the Mac was the merest glint in Steve Jobs’ eye.
Moreover, the book tells the tale of these ads’ sociocultural context – glorious postwar American exceptionalism, mixing and matching (and masking) a certain cold-war ruthlessness. The likes of Lockheed Martin, Grumman, Northrop, Bosch, Goodyear, Shell, RCA and dozens of other long-forgotten defence contractors would never produce such artistic corporate imagery again. Nor would the future ever look so retro.
Another Science Fiction is available on Amazon now (and no, we’re not on a percentage!).
