Happy birthday: the big 3-0

May 6th, 2010 by Stuart L

They say the simple ideas are often the best, and surely there is no better example than Pacman.

First released on May 22nd 1980 in Japan, it became an icon of the decade’s culture. There were spin off games, a TV show and merchandise galore, all driven by the game’s popularity. The fact that the original Pacman is still enjoyed by gamers today is testament to Namco’s basic format.

If you ever wanted proof of that, look no further than the whopping 94% of American consumers who recognise the brand. (source: Davie-Brown index)

Imagine how many brands in today’s market would love that kind of awareness? It’s hard to believe, for me at least, that Pacman is 30 this year. As a staple of my formative years I owe him a lot.

I haven’t got him a card, and I haven’t bought him a present but – from the bottom of my heart – happy birthday.
